CLAY DOLL COTTAGE INDUSTRY OF INDIA: A STUDY OF GHURNI, KRISHNANAGAR MUNICIPALITY OF NADIA DISTRICT,WEST BENGAL

Abstract

Ghurni, a neighborhood  of  Krishnanagar Municipality, a centre, famous for  the production  of world class clay dolls and terracotta works often referred to as Krishnanagar clay dolls is located on the left bank of Jalangi river in the district of Nadia. The area of the Krishnanagar Municipality is around 16 km2 and is divided into 24 wards of which Ghurni is spread over the ward nos. 1, 2,3 and 21.Georeference of Ghurni is latitude-23̊ 24̍ 54.92̎ N longitude-88˚ 30̍ 30.67̎ E.”Clay dolls” represent a 250 yrs old art of Krishnanagar .   It was said that initially it was grown and flourished by Raja Krishna Chandra. Krishnanagar clay dolls are unique in their realism and the quality of their finish. Potters making clay statuettes of gods, goddess and folk figures clad in traditional garb were famous from British period to modern era in India as well as in the world.The main objectives of the study are to prove the impact of clay doll cottage  industry on the economy of the area and to investigate the problems related to this industry and suggest the remedies to mitigate the specific problems. The present results shows that  declination  in domestic demand ,other alternative products of doll ,the cost of raw materials, technological  disadvancement  and No aspirant of artistic works are main problems of this unique industry. Despite these problems there are several opportunities  to rejuvenate the famous clay doll making activities with the some new innovative  technologies regarding Clay Doll Cottage Industry, Supports from all. This small scale  industry will be enhancing the comprehensive rural economic development in west Bengal by generating significant employment opportunity through low capital investments
