FORMALISM: PERTURBATIONS IN TWENTIETH CENTURY LITERARY CRITICISM AND ITS INHERITANCE

Formalism started in early twentieth century in Russia. It was an influential school which emphasized on the literary language by totally rejecting the historical implications of a work of art. This rejection of historicity was taken as anti-Marxist. Eventually the authorities forced the Formalists out of the country. Their works remained hidden and suppressed, but even then they continued to influence the major literary scene. The present paper will try to the origin of Formalist movement, its principles of literature, forced suppression of its proponents and various impacts of Formalism on other theories.
