POTENCY OF SOME GENERIC AND ETHICAL ANTIBIOTICS BEING SOLD IN JABALPUR
Keywords:
Generic antibiotics, Ethical antibiotics, minimum inhibitory concentration, bacterial infection, potency.Abstract
The compound either naturally occurring or synthesized in laboratory which kills the bacteria in a minimum dose were called as ‘antibiotics’. Antibiotics today are the main line of treatments for diseases caused by bacterial infection including typhoid fever, tuberculosis etc. The drug market in India and abroad contains two parallel kinds of drugs including antibiotics, ethical antibiotics and generic antibiotics. Principally both the drugs should be similar in their content and active ingredients. The present work is aimed at comparing generic antibiotics with their ethical counterpart (as per the test prescribed by Indian Pharmacoepia 2007). The main objective of the study was to clarify the concept if generic antibiotics have same potency as of their ethical counterpart. The different test bacteria were used against different antibiotics and the potency is calculated as minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The result showed that the ethical drugs always produced bigger zones as compared to their generic counterparts. The results clearly indicated that the generic antibiotics are not passed through stringent quality control test and hence are largely unsafe for the treatment of bacterial infection.
