Bihar is the 13th largest state in the country, comprising about 2.85 percent of the total geographical area of the country. However, the total population of the state as per the census 2011 was 1038 million about 8.5 percent of the total population of the country, making it the third most populous state in the country. Thus, it should come as no surprise that the population density of the state stands at 1102 persons per sq km, which is the highest in the country, as against as all-India population density of 382 per sq km. From 2001 to 2011, the increase in population density for Bihar was as high as 25 percent, where as it was only 18 percent for all India. As per the estimates of tendulkar committee, in 2004-05, 54.5 percent of the population lived below poverty line in Bihar. For rural and urban areas, the poverty levels were 55.7 percent and 52.7 percent respectively.
