JIVA KARUNYA OFSAINT RAMALINGA ADIGALAR AND ITS RELIGIOUS AND SOCIAL IMPACTS

The advent of Ramalinga Adigalar took place in the Nineteenth Century when India was under the clutches of the British Empire. Historians say that it was a century of famines. From 1801 to 1850 there were six famines in which 15 lakhs people died. There was a problem of religious fundamentalism and conflicts between different religious traditions. The unstable economical, social status and conflicts of religion in India particularly in Tamil Nadu made St. Ramalingar to rethink spirituality beyond any particular religiosity and bring out good social status of people through his significant experience of God as Arutperunjothi and Jiva Karunyathat is compassion towards all living creatures as a channel to reach God. St. Ramalinga Adigalar’s understanding of Jiva Karunya is completely against religious fundamentalism, violence, terrorism, spirit of competence , disharmony and selfishness. He emphasized and insisted on love, compassion, friendliness, fellowship, unity, equality, justice etc. He advocated to love and help poor and needy in the society without any kind of discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, sex color, nation etc. Ramalingar experienced the Supreme Grace of Light and exposed Jiva Karunya in his practical life by starting Samarasa Suddha Sanmarga Sangam to have unity, love one another, and quench thirsty, feed hungry and a place of hope. St. Ramalingar’s understanding of Arutperunjothi and Jiva Karunya made a great impact on the religious, social, ethical aspects of human beings and it is very relevant and meaningful today to promote loving and a humanistic society.
