Abstract

Higher education today is more a commodity than a valuable asset. This research paper is built on the framework that higher education system in India suffers from demoralization and alienation of learners from the ecosystem. It shall begin with a broad overview of education and its distinct role in shaping the human society. Presenting the pristine uniqueness of the ancient Indian education system, it shall expose the gradual decline in the quality of education in the contemporary era. Next, it shall proceed to emphasize quality in higher education and the need for equal opportunities for women in acquiring higher education. It shall also discuss the need to develop the soft skills, research skills, civic skills, craft skills, image literacy skills and problem-solving skills in addition to the technological skills in learners. The article shall elaborate the goals of higher education in this global age and explicate that it should acknowledge and appreciate human diversity and biodiversity and establish unity among all human beings, flora and fauna. It should aim to create a new society based on empathy and altruism. It should sensitize the learners to the numerous social evils and enable them to come out with positive and creative solutions to tackle them effectively. It shall also state that overdependence of technology in education is detrimental to human progress. The paper shall conclude on the note that collective and concentrated efforts by educators and policy makers can bring about some positive changes in higher education and build a morally strong and robust society.
