ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY OF SCOPARIA DULCIS
Keywords:

:- The present study was carried out to evaluate the antifungal activity of different extracts of Scoparia dulcis leaves against five human pathogenic fungal strains. Selected test fungi were Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium solani and Penicillium chrysogenum. Miconazole (30 µg) acted as control antifungal agent. For the study agar well diffusion method was used. The extract used was 50µl. The inhibitory activity was measured in mm. and compared with standard antifungal drug. The result shows that the aqueous and petroleum ether extract of Scoparia dulcis leaf showed no activity against any of the test fungi but the methanol extract inhibits the growth of Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium solani and Penicillium chrysogenum with zone diameter 10, 12, 10 and 7 mm respectively. Ethyl acetate extract also inhibits the growth of Candida albicans and Fusarium solani with zone diameter 12 and 13 mm respectively. Thus it is revealed that these organic extracts can be used as a source of antifungal agents against infectious diseases caused by these fungi.
