ENVIRONMENTALISM: TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE TO GANDHIAN ALTERNATIVE
Keywords:
taking, Fudging, coalescenceAbstract
The modern era is the period of the new environmentalism. The rosy glow of the seventies is over. Fudging, undging, compromise and accommodation are no longer satisfactory ways out. A very different picture is emerging in which a coalescence of nineteenth century romantic ideals, early twentieth century technical expertise and scientific understanding, and late twentieth century political lobbying and institution building is all taking place. It is however possible to locate the choices we are making for our lifestyle: technocentrism is based on a man –centred view of the earth coupled with a managerial approach to resource development and environmental protesction, ecocentrism is based on the belief thet social relations cannot be disconnected from man-environment relations.
