BACKYARD HATCHERY OPERATION FOR SEED PRODUCTION OF MUDCRAB, SCYLLA TRANQUEBARICA
Keywords:
.Abstract
Scylla spp. commonly known as the mudcrab, has a huge market demand all over the world, particularly in South East Asian countries. This seafood delicacy is considered as one of the tastiest of all crab species. This is available worldwide and is mostly sold live in international markets. There is an unmet demand for mudcrabs internationally and this has led to over-exploitation of this species in many area across the Indian coast. Indiscriminate exploitation of natural mudcrab resources disregarding the size , maturity status ( berried or not) and physiological status ( water or hard) has resulted heavy pressure on the wild population. The huge market demand for mudcrabs ( Scylla tranquebarica.) has attracted the attention of both fishery scientists as well as enterprenuers as a potential candidate species for commercial level aquaculture. However, culture of this species couldnot get momentum for want of adequate seeds. Offlate the breeding and seed production of this species has been standardized at this institute,
These backyard ponds can well be utilized for small hatchery operation of S.tranquebarica seeds and thus can improve the socio-economic status of the coastal fisherfolks . In this paper, the techniques developed such as brood stock management, live feed / water management and larval development for success of seed production of mudcrab species are incorporated.S.tranquebarica. Besides these, survival and economics are also discussed in this paper.
