CAN DERMATOGLYPHICS PREDICT EYE DISORDER?

Abstract

Studies in the past reveals the association of Dermatoglyphics with various diseases like diabetes however, its association with myopia and hypermetropia are still not fully established. Therefore, present study was conducted with the aim to explore whether any variation in fingerprint pattern between Refractive Error (RE) i.e. myopic and hypermetropic subjects and normals/controls; in turn to assess the applicability or reliability of the Dermatoglyphics (digital) as a predictive tool for eye disorder.  After explaining the purpose the fingerprints and personal information were collected from male (N=72) and female (N=191) teacher trainees at RIE, Mysore, India. Patterns are identified and data were computed. Results shows that the RE subjects had arches (3.6%) half the time less than the normals (6.4%) had; this was due to the lower percentage of simple arch in right and left hands of RE subjects (1.8% and 2.9% respectively) than normals (4.3% and 5.8%); and no difference in loop, whorl and mixed patterns.  It may be concluded that people having arches lesser than normal level/ range may be susceptible to myopia and hypermetropia; and Dermatoglyphics can be applied as a predictive tool for eye disorder.
