Abstract

It is interesting to inquire as to why and how small states relatively insulate themselves from the neo-imperialist policies inherent in the globalisation project of the powerful states to create their national identity and push it to the extent of pursuing nationalistic agendas. Nation-building connotes the process of identity formation of a nation ranging from a stage of identity construction with the assertion of territoriality and sovereignty to a state's coercive imposition of a particular identity on its population. The paper analyses the impact of power politics and international norms on the nation-building process of small states in general by taking historical and recurring factors into account.
