Abstract

The decades of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s witnessed cataclysmic changes as during this time there were the simultaneous discussions on both nationalism and colonialism and India was being forced to face the advent of modernity. Apart from male writers of Indian English literature, there were a number of women novelists who contributed to the literary field . By their writings, they secured the future of Indian writing in English by turning writing in English into a solid material project that had assumed international proportions by the 1940s. These included writers like Anita Desai, Kamala Markandaya, Nayantara Sehgal etc. During the 1990s, India became a popular literally nation as a number of women authors made their debut in this era. The list of Indian women novelists comprises popular names such as Bharati Mukherjee, Nergis Dalal, Krishna Sobti , Diva Mehta, Gauri Deshpande,Ruth Jhabwala, Shobha De, Arundhati Roy, Jhumpa Lahiri and many more who are known for the contemporary approach in their novels .
