A Study of the Status of Child Labourers in Howrah District

Abstract

: Every child is a gift of God. This gift must be nurtured with care and affection, within the family and society. But unfortunately due to socio-economic and cultural problems, the code of child centeredness was replaced by neglect, abuse and deprivation. Child labour is one of the great problems of our country. The present study was conducted to know the status of the child labourers in Howrah district. The objectives of the study were to know the educational status, nature of work, working hour, wages and also the causes of the child labour. A sample of 70 child labourers (Boys-40 and Girls-30) was collected through purposive sampling technique from different areas of Howrah district (West Bengal). Survey research method was used. A self made questionnaire was used for data collection. To analyse the data, percentage and bar graphs were used. Findings of the study revealed that most of the child labourers were illiterate, worked in factory for 9-12 hours, wages were monthly between Rs. 501-1000 and also the main cause of child labour was proverty.
