Abstract
At the core of the book lies a simple question- “what can prosperity look like in a finite world, with limited resources and a population expected to exceed 9 billion people within decades”?“Do we have decent vision of prosperity for such a world”? (p.3)
The response to these questions can be given by describing prosperity in economic terms.GDP is a measure of ‘economic activity’. A rising per capita GDP is equivalent to increasing prosperity.
One of the key message this book is that our technologies, our economy and our social aspirations are all mis- aligned with any meaningful expression of prosperity. The idea of social progress that drives us is based on the persistent expansion of material wants is basically flawed. By eroding the basis for tomorrow, we are try to pursue a good life today.
