Abstract

Production, distribution, and consumption of generic pharmaceuticalshas had an increasing effect on the pharma industry worldwide. In recent years, the market for the production of generics has developed various adaptations to suit different structures of demand, legislation, and distribution. Increased level of expenditure on medicines worldwide due to spiking demand has sparked a sea change in related government policies and statutes. A broadoutline of the international framework of generics markets and their development helps inform a focused case study on an emerging player in the field, China, and their predicted effect on the pharmaceutical industry.Detailed analysis of the international recognition of intellectual property, the impact of the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights agreement (TRIPS) on the pharmaceutical industry, and different perspectives about the development of generics production in China – employing qualitative methodology and several quantitative data – reveals the broad influence of Chinese generics.
