HOUSING THE HOMELESS: NHB’S FINANCIAL PRODUCTS FOR THE INDIAN UNDERBELLY

Abstract

National Housing Bank (NHB) was established in the year 1988, under the National Housing Bank Act, 1987 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Reserve Bank of India, with the objective to operate as a principal agency to promote housing finance institutions and to provide financial and other support to such institutions. One of the prime objectives of the Bank is to establish and promote a sound and stable housing finance system in the country. NHB is pursuing its charter and vision to shape and develop the housing finance market in India along sustainable lines and promoting financial and institutional depth in the housing finance sector. National Housing Bank also offers a number of financial products which are key to the development of market based solutions for low and moderate income housing segments. In this paper all the financial products for the under-privileged such as Golden Jublilee Rural Housing Finance Scheme, Rural Housing Fund, Refinance of Construction Finance for Affordable Housing, Refinance Scheme for Women, Urban Housing Fund, Reverse Mortgage Loan and Credit Risk Guarantee Fund Scheme for Low Income Housing have been discussed and analysed.
