Measures of Aging and its Trend in Indian Context: Some Investigations under Stability Conditions

Abstract

Population momentum and population aging occur when an initially growing population
experiences a reduction in fertility to replacement level .The studies on stable population and
population momentum initiated by Coale, Demeny, Keyfitz and others in the middle of the
20th century have become the point of discussion among population policy makers besides
population scientists and researchers working on these areas. The aim of this paper is (i) to
work out the trend of aging/elderly population (aged 60 and above) in India and (ii) to make
some investigation to discuss issues related to measures of aging. Models for the measures of
aging are developed with application to reproductive value. Based on a set of hypothetical
and realistic data, it has been found that at the time of stabilisation of India's population
(when NRR=1), about one fifth of the country's population would be above sixty years. The
suitability of models developed for measures on aging has also been discussed. It is hoped
that such measures on aging and its future trend would be helpful for policy makers and
researchers on elderly population
