PROACTIVE MEASURES TO COMBAT VIOLENCE ON WOMEN -A STEP TOWARDS A JUST SOCIETY

Abstract
Violence against women is rooted in the unequal power equations that exists world over. There are innumerable incidents of violence against women ranging from subtle ways to those most gory and human. According to NCW- National Commission for Women at least one out of three women face domestic violence.
The Indian Constitution guarantees justice and equality. Several amendments and innumerous legal provisions have been initiated from time to time by the Government of India to address and combat gender discrimination and violence.In spite of such a broad spectrum of legislations which provide women legal protection and confidence to fight injustice violence on women continue and are on the risefor laws cannot change a society. A fundamental change in the mindset of people is essential. We need to address the retrogressive pattern of thinking; more gender sensitive workshopsshould be organized with the aim to disseminate information. Most importantly, the power within every woman needs to be awakened
In this paper the authors deal primarily on the proactive measures that can be taken by educators -‘the guardian class’ to combat violence. The authors shall take the case study of their own institution emphasizing the self-defense activities conducted for the protection and emancipation of their female students and the response thereof.
