The objective of teaching English in India should not be 'producing bookworms' or 'linguistic robots'. What is important is to motivate the students, by creating awareness amongst them regarding the importance of English and then gradually helping the student to attain his goal. The basic objective should thus be, to make the student independent. It has rightly been said, " Give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish you feed him for life." It is up to the teacher to make the student realize that by gaining competence in English he shall hold the master-key to success in the contemporary world. Similarly, this paper throws light on how a teacher of English can set about fulfilling this aim. It also points out the ground of the secondary school level. It is concerned with the means to achieve the aims and objectives of teaching English. It discusses how reading, writing, listening and speaking can be made more effective, how the basics should be taught and what a teacher should aim to do in teaching English at secondary school level.
