Performance Assessment Study of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme: An Overview

Abstract

‘To overcome the problem of poverty different Poverty alleviation programs such as wage employment programs, rural housing schemes and public distribution system have been initiated from time to time by the Indian Government. Some were partially successful in addressing the issue of poverty while others suffered from major flaws during their implementation. However, these programs failed to provide social security to the rural poor’.

‘The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act currently provides the right of employment to about 5.4 crore rural poor in 200 most backward districts of the country. The act provides employment to every rural household for 100 days in a year. MNREGA was launched on February 2, 2006 from Anantpur in Andhra Pradesh and initially covered 200 “poorest” districts of the country’.

‘The Act was implemented in phased manner – 130 districts were added in 2007-08. With its spread over 625 districts across the country, the flagship program of the UPA Government has the potential to increase the purchasing power of rural poor, reduce distress migration and to create useful assets in rural Indian’.

‘Union Rural development Minister, Nitin Gadkari, proposed to limit MGNREGA programmes within tribal and poor areas. But it is due to the role of contractor and broker in the process of implementation of MNREGA could not achieve the targeted objectives and related problems Beneficiaries, Delay of Payment. Fake, corruption etc’.

‘This is true that is largest scale on corruption in MNREGA but it cannot accurate proper channel that its plan to finished but should be search solution to problems and to done this scheme is continue because provide to people is employment and social security’.
