Education in general, and higher education in particular, enables people to better respond to the postmodern society challenges implied by legal constraints and ethical principles, to accomplish tasks for the good of society and to be responsible global citizens. Making people become more socially responsible represents an essential objective for today’s universities. According to Gourova, Todorova and Gourov, “Educational institutions have a special place in the society and provide services related to the transfer of knowledge to their customers – individuals, public and private organizations and the society in general. Their development is influenced by various factors linked to political, technological, economic, environmental, as well as social trends and changes.” Universities are urged to play an important role in meeting the environmental challenges by integrating the sustainability concept in their curricula.Similarly , corporate social responsibility of future employees is not only an item in the code of practice of one corporation or another, but an internalized personal value which is reflected upon society, for the mutual good. As the universities have become more socially engaged, their social role has also changed fundamentally. This paper aims to highlight on this social role that universities are expected to perform today.References
