BACKGROUND OF THE ORIGIN OF A REGIONAL POLITICAL PARTY IN POST- INDEPENDENCE NORTH BENGAL: THE UTTARKHANDA DAL

The present study is an attempt to make an analytical discussion to trace the genesis of the Uttarkhanda Dal and its demand for separate state in the 60s and 80s respectively of the last century, which had shaken the political sky of North Bengal especially of its northern part. It attracted the serious attention not only of the contemporary politicians, sociologists, historians and the intellectuals but also of the later time for its regional political momentum. Though some academicians like Dr. Ananda Gopal Ghosh ( The Uttarkhanda-Kamatapur movement : A Historical perspective in Proceedings of North-East India History Association, 10th session, Shilong, 1989), Dr. Dhirendra Nath Das (Regional Movements, Ethnicity & Politics-2005-Delhi), Dr. Sailen Debnath (Social & political Tensions in North Bengal,-2007- Siliguri) and Dr. Rup Kumar Barman (Contested Regionalism-2007-Delhi) have made an attempt to discuss the Uttar Khanda Movement but they have made no attempt to trace the causative factors for the genesis of the Uttarkhanda Dal. Though an attempt has been made to find out the origin of the U.K.D. in '' Socio Political Movements in North Bengal"-(Ed.- Sukhbilash Barma-2007-Delhi) but the feeling of the present writer is that no attempt has been made to go into the details to view the problem. Therefore, it needs further careful re-examination of the problem. Considering this, the present writer has made a careful attempt to re-examine the problem analysing socio - economic and political ingredients that have led to the origin of this regional party in North Bengal. However, this study has been made mainly on the basis of hitherto unpublished primary sources, local periodicals, published books of some non academicians, field studies and other local sources.
