DOMINIQUE LAPIERRE & LARRY COLLIN’S O JERUSALEM: A STUDY OF ARAB- ISRAEL CONFLICT AND THE CONTEMPORARY SCENARIO

The tenacity with which the Jews have clung to the memory of the biblical kingdom and the Promised Land for more than two thousand years can perhaps be attributed to the persecution they have endured throughout history. From the first Hebrew tribes fleeing Mesopotamia, to fleeing Egypt under Moses they have been assaulted by Assyria, Babylon, Greece and Rome. In 586 B.C. and 70 A.D. their conquerors destroyed the temple they had built in Jerusalem’s Mount Mariah and forced them into exile. The Christian Church strove to emphasize the differences between their religions and forcing upon them a spiritual apartheid. Theodosius II in his legal code, condemned Judaism; Dogbert drove them from Gaul; Spain seized their children; Byzantine emperor Heraclius forbade Jewish worship; the Crusaders vandalized their communities on their route to Jerusalem. Most countries barred them from owning land, Craft and Commerce guilds were closed to them. The Fourth Lateran council in 1215 forced them to wear a distinguishing badge. Edward I of England and Philip of France expelled them from their nations. They flourished under the Arab rule in the Spain of Caliphate, but after the Christian re-conquest, Ferdinand in 1492 expelled them from Spain. In Germany they could not ride in a carriage and had to pay a special toll to enter a city. In Venice they were restricted to Ghetto Nuevo. In Poland the Cossack revolt, wiped out more than one lac Jews. The Czars fenced them in ghettos. The most appalling manifestation of their destiny was Hitler’s gas chambers.
