Abstract

To explore and understand Foreign Language Teaching in a particular set up, it is necessary to study and understand the teaching learning phenomenon carried out /occurring in the set up. There are numerous factors that affect the whole process. However, two things determine the course of language teaching the most (a) The practical realities faced by the teacher in actual classroom (b) the method and techniques of teaching. As Richards and Rodgers also point out “Changes in language teaching method throughout history have reflected recognition of changes in the kind of proficiency learners need such as a move toward oral proficiency rather than reading comprehension as the goal of language study.”(Richards and Rodgers 3) These methods are grounded in theories derived from linguistics, educational psychology and a mix of both. This paper tries to investigate the actual teaching learning practices of English language in classroom environment. A case study of Government schools and Public schools has been undertaken. The scope of study encompasses primary, secondary and senior secondary levels peering at various issues therein.
