Abstract

Railway is the cheapest means of transportation in India. Approximately 80% of the railway lines were established by the British government. The expansion of railway tracks by British was based on their own benefit rather than benefitting the common people of India. What India could do in the last 68 years, after independence, is just 25% expansion in the railway tracks. Even this 25 % expansion has also been very unequal and unfair to the states which were not very active politically in the national politics. Further, the differences between the rail fare of passenger/ freight and road transport fare of passenger/ freight are continuously increasing over the years due to the politics of appeasement which is deliberately keeping railways’ fare low.  The paper tries to analyze the impact of price distortions created by the differences in the railway fares and road transport. It also focuses on the regional disparity in the expansion of railways and its regional impact.
