Keywords:
terrorist groups, elucidated, mutually assured destructioAbstract
The advent of nuclear empowerment to meet the energy and development needs of the security developments led the nations to acquire and develop nuclear weaponry. The notion of psychological attachment of nuclear capabilities with the concept of deterrence, the claimed legitimacy for states through legal means, would also have impacted the thinking of perpetrators of terror in general. Power that could be misutilised in nuclear acquisitions might have encouraged the mentality of the evil doers amongst the non-state actors and suspicious entities1.
Most dangerous threats that commonly interlink in broadening the agenda of national security are being elucidated from varying trends and scope of terrorism. The increasing level of technological sophistication among terrorist groups, coupled with a renewed determination to achieve political goals, has significantly raised the potential for nuclear terrorism .Nuclear Terrorism can take many forms, from an attack on a nuclear power plant to the theft and detonation of a nuclear weapon. However, it is important to remember that each nuclear terrorism scenario has a differing degree of likelihood as well as very different consequences. Potential threats of nuclear terrorism will continue to remain unpredictable incidence, asymmetric in nature and multidimensional in scope1. However, the fear now is not concerned with “mutually assured destruction” but from nuclear terrorism2References
