Mulk Raj Anand – Master of the Poorest of the Poor
Keywords:
Downtrodden, underprivileged, untouchable, have-nots, Exploitation.Abstract
Mulk Raj Anand is one of the major novelists of Indo-Anglian fiction today. He has a distinguished position – as a novelist of the downtrodden community – which neither time nor influence can dare to erase. Before Anand wrote about the underprivileged, they were not allowed to enter the sacred precincts of the novel in India. He is the first Indian writer writing in English to take untouchables, coolies, labourers and workers as heroes in his novels and to present a picture of Indian life and society free from romantic idealization. His novels show how persistently he uses his fiction to explore the injustice and sufferings of the have-nots. He protests against the tyranny and exploitation and asserts his belief in the essential nobility of man. Alongwith, he dreams of a casteless, classless and socially equal societyReferences
