Abstract

The time allocated to physical education in the majority of Medical colleges has declined over the last decade. This probably could be due to the misconception among the authorities colleges and the students that a would-be doctor has to spend more time in studies rather than on participating in any of the games either for recreation or otherwise. Sport as seen by a medical students view is just for recreation for few minutes to maximum of an hour or two, that too depending on the calendar of their academic activities.1

Furthermore, it has been suggested that physical education, physical activity and sport have the potential to impact on their attendance which in turn could impact on academic achievement. For example, there is a strong relationship between attendance and exam performance, even after prior attainment is taken into account and significant relationships have been identified between attendance and skill acquisition, knowledge and understanding, behaviour, personal development, relationships.2, 3

But it has also been argued that the potential psychological and social benefits of physical education, physical activity and sport may indirectly enhance academic performance by enhancing mental health, improving feelings of feelings connectedness and by enhancing positive social behavior.4
