IMPORTANCE OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE IN LIBRARIES

Open source digital library packages are gaining popularity now a days. To build a digital library under economical condition open source software is preferable open source software discussed in the present study. Comes to the rescues of less privileged libraries to deal with the increasing demands for use of technology OSS enables democratization of technology OSS has definite advantages over proprietary systems in the total cost of ownership (TCO) since it is available free for download on the Internet. Thus OSS bears great important to the libraries in developing countries like India. The study is based on the available open source useful to libraries in general. It includes integrated library system ILS), cataloguing tools, resources sharing tools, digital library tools, and other information service tools useful in day to day function of the libraries. In this paper discuss advantages of OSS & disadvantage and function of OSS in libraries.
