Abstract

This paper aims at understanding the role of the English language in the fast changing economic scenario of the world. People all around the globe are desperately tryingto improve Englishnot simply for self-improvement, but as an economic necessity as itis not just the official languagebut a major tool, which help people tap into new opportunities inside and outside the country. The connection between English proficiency and gross national income per capita is high. Its not just income that improvesbutthe quality of life. Globalization has caused fast movement of capital and technology and most importantly labour from one country to another making it mandatory to have a common language for effective communication In the wake of increasing globalization and internationalization, communication and education across the borders, English language is key towards better opportunities for employmentand is a dominant factor in upward mobility. English has become imperative in different professions, especially those involving customer services. This paper also evaluates the advantageous position of India in global economy due to its richness in English proficient workforceand the role of policies made by government in uplifting the educational and language proficiency level of the people.
